Background
Kitec® brass plumbing fittings were made by IPEX, USA, the American division of a Canadian company. Those fittings have been installed in thousands of homes since the 1990s, including many in Louisiana.
The fittings are used behind kitchen sinks or in bathroom shower stalls and sinks. The fittings connect sections of IPEX’s flexible aluminum pipe, which is sandwiched between an inner and outer layer of plastic pipe. Kitec® pipes are generally colored blue for cold water use and orange for hot water use.
The Kitec® pipe system was hailed as an innovation when it was introduced because it provided much greater flexibility than conventional copper pipe, cutting installation time and expense. But problems soon emerged. Homeowners claimed minerals in their tap water corroded the metal in the fittings, leaching zinc from the brass and causing a build-up of powder inside their water pipes. In some cases, homeowners experienced a noticeable drop in their water pressure, which damaged their appliances. In other cases, they complained that their pipes leaked or exploded, causing extensive water and flood damage.
The alleged defect in Kitec® plumbing fittings has forced thousands of homeowners to replace the fittings at a cost of up to $9,000 per home. At least one class action lawsuit has been filed against IPEX. Also named in that lawsuit were homebuilding companies and plumbing contractors that installed the fittings.
Kitec® fittings may have been used in the construction of new homes in Louisiana. Residents in older homes where plumbing has been replaced may also have Kitec® fittings. Whether your home is new or old, the risk is the same—if the Kitec® fittings fail, you could suffer severe water damage and thousands of dollars in repair costs.
