Levaquin
What is LEVAQUIN ®?
LEVAQUIN® ® is often prescribed to treat certain bacterial infections in adults, such as infections of the lung, skin, sinuses and urinary tract. According to the FDA, taking LEVAQUIN® can result in debilitating injuries such as tendonitis and tendon rupture. Most reported injuries have been to the Achilles heel, shoulder (rotator cuff), hand, bicep and thumb.
LEVAQUIN’s association with tendonitis and tendon rupture has been known for years. Despite knowing of the serious health risks, Johnson & Johnson and Ortho-McNeil opted to market LEVAQUIN® as a safe, effective antibiotic.
In 2008, the FDA forced the drug makers to add a Black Box Warning, the most serious type of safety warning, to LEVAQUIN’s packaging to make patients aware of these dangerous side effects. Unfortunately, it was already too late for many victims injured by this drug.
Because of the severity of the injuries to tendons, many LEVAQUIN® victims must undergo surgeries and extensive rehabilitation for their injuries. Some will never completely recover from the damage caused by LEVAQUIN® .
What Are the Symptoms of LEVAQUIN® Injuries? Who is at Risk?
The FDA advised that tendonitis and tendon rupture can occur while the patient is actively taking the drug or even long after they have completed taking the medication.
Tendonitis symptoms include:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Inflammation
- Discomfort in the Achilles heel, shoulder (rotator cuff), hand, thumb, bicep or other tendon
Tendon Rupture symptom include:
- A snapping or popping sound in the tendon area
- Bruising of the tendon
- Inability to move/bear weight on the affected area.
Injury can occur after any usage of LEVQUIN® including by tablet, capsule or injection. Injuries can occur in all ages and health conditions. However, the risk of developing side effects like tendonitis or tendon rupture increases in patients over 60 years old, patients using steroid therapy, and in heart, kidney or lung transplant recipients.
