Fixodent PoliGrip Zinc Poisoning
Fixodent and Super PoliGrip Plus Associated with Zinc Poisoning
Popular denture cream adhesives including those used in Fixodent and Super PoliGrip Plus may contain excess levels of zinc, reportedly causing zinc poisoning in some users.
Zinc poisoning can lead to copper deficiency, neurological problems including neuropathy and, in extreme cases, death.
What is Zinc?
Zinc is a heavy metal that is an essential part of a balanced diet; however, ingesting too much zinc can cause serious ill health effects including ataxia (dysfunction of the part of the nervous system that affects coordination), lethargy (fatigue), copper deficiency or neuropathy, which can lead to serious neurological issues or death.
Zinc Poisoning and Fixodent & Super PoliGrip Plus Denture Creams
At the current time, manufacturers are not required by the FDA to list potential health risks associated with their denture cream. In fact, zinc isn’t even listed as an ingredient in Fixodent. Lawsuits are being filed against the manufacturers of these denture creams for failure to warn customers about the products’ zinc toxicity and possible health effects.
Approximately 35 million Americans wear dentures. The largest group of denture-users is the elderly, who are most at risk of suffering the ill health effects of zinc poisoning. If not caught and treated early, zinc poisoning can lead to permanent side effects or even death.
In 2001, the National Academy of Sciences stated that 40 mg is the maximum tolerable amount of zinc that should be ingested within a day. However, researchers with Neurology estimated that heavy users of denture adhesives could be consuming up to 330 mg per day. For adults, the Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) of zinc is 11mg for men and 8 mg for women. Zinc poisoning typically occurs when 10x the recommended daily amount is ingested.
What Are the Side Effects of Zinc in Denture Cream?
Zinc is a known intestinal irritant. Typically, the first signs of zinc poisoning include intestinal distress such as vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea and nausea.
Victims may also complain about numbness, inability to urinate, skin reactions, jaundice, seizures, liver dysfunction, joint pain, chills, fever, coughing, loss of sensation, shortness of breath and/or a metallic taste in the mouth. Zinc poisoning may also cause irreversible mental decline, neurological issues or neuropathy. Neuropathy is noted for muscle cramps or weakness, muscle spasms, loss of balance, loss of coordination and tingling, numbness or pain (sometimes excruciating) in the extremities.
If you or a loved one has experienced these symptoms while using a denture cream adhesive such as Fixodent or Super PoliGrip Plus, seek medical attention immediately. Zinc poisoning must be caught and treated early in order to have the best chance at full recovery.
Zinc may also interact with some medications such as birth control pills, some antibiotics and mineral supplements like calcium, magnesium, copper and iron.
For people with allergies to zinc, chemical sensitivities, HIV or hemochromatosis, ingesting zinc may be dangerous. It may lead to fever, cough, nausea, reduced immune function, mineral imbalances, cholesterol changes and other issues. Zinc may also have negative effects on unborn babies, and doctors urge pregnant women to avoid ingesting supplemental zinc.
