Hydroxycut Liver Injuries

The FDA is urging consumers to immediately stop using Hydroxycut diet supplements, due to the possibility of severe liver problems and other health issues. So far, the FDA has received multiple reports of serious liver problems and at least one death believed to be associated with Hydroxycut.
The agency is also investigating other Hydroxycut-related health problems including jaundice, elevated liver enzymes, liver damage requiring liver transplants, seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.

Health Risks
Hydroxycut products were aggressively marketed as an easy solution to weight-loss, fat burning, energy-enhancement, and as diet aids. Hydroxycut quickly became a popular choice for dieters and bodybuilders alike, selling nine million packages last year. Now, the FDA is warning consumer to stop using these products due to reports of severe liver damage, including the death of a 19-year-old man reported in March 2009.
Some victims have developed liver complications even when following the dosage instructions on the bottle. Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice, brown urine, nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching and loss of appetite. Some victims sustained live injuries so severe, they required liver transplants.
Hydroxycut products contain a number of ingredients and herbal extracts. The FDA is currently investigating which ingredient or combination of ingredients is associated with the reported health problems.
One serious liver condition, rhabdomyolysis occurs as a result of muscle damage. The breakdown of muscle fibers causes a protein pigment called myoglobin to be released into the bloodstream. The myoglobin is then filtered out of the body by the kidneys. However, some myoglobin breakdown into harmful compounds which can injury or block the kidneys, resulting in kidney damage or failure.
The FDA is continuing to investigate the link between Hydroxycut, liver problems and other serious side effects, such as seizures and cardiovascular disorders. Victims are urged to seek medical treatment and report their injuries to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting system.

Dangerous drugs and dangerous medical products can often do more harm than the disease or condition they are treating. Despite FDA regulations, many products slip by with unknown and harmful side effects that could be caused by a flaw in design or production. Sometimes these side effects are known by the company, but the product is pushed through in order to avoid delays and make profit.
