The April 20 fire and explosion on the oil rig Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico has turned into a tragedy of untold proportions for the Gulf Coast.
The Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd. and leased to BP PLC, was drilling 50 miles southeast of Venice, La., in 5,000 feet of water when the rig exploded. The burning rig eventually collapsed and sank.
The accident exacted a steep human toll—11 oil rig workers are presumed dead, and 17 other maritime workers were injured, some critically.
An environmental tragedy unfolded shortly after the accident, when 210,000 gallons of oil per day began leaking into the Gulf from the drill site. The oil has drifted across open waters and is polluting the Gulf Coast’s shores, beaches, rivers, wetlands and fishing grounds.
This growing environmental disaster could prove devastating to the livelihoods of those on the Gulf Coast. To protect the legal rights of those workers, businesses and others harmed by the oil spill, Attorney Richard J. Arsenault, founding partner of Louisiana’s Neblett, Beard & Arsenault, has joined with other lawyers and filed multiple class action lawsuits.
"Just as the Gulf Coast was rebounding from the devastating effects of Katrina, we now face one of the most serious environmental disasters of our time. Sadly, millions of gallons of oil continue to flow into the Gulf of Mexico," said Attorney Richard J. Arsenault. "If the estimate of 5,000 barrels per day is accurate, this environmental catastrophe could eclipse that of the Exxon Valdez.
