Uncontrolled Acceleration in Toyota Vehicles
Toyota has initiated a series of recalls that affect millions of vehicles already in the marketplace, and virtually halted production of new vehicles. Both recalls, one for malfunctioning floor mats and the other for malfunctioning gas pedals, were linked to vehicles that can unexpectedly and uncontrollably accelerate under normal circumstances. Numerous incidents of uncontrolled acceleration which resulted in accidents involving serious injuries and death have been reported to Toyota.
Floor Mat Recalls
In September of 2009, a recall was announced that affected 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Toyota claimed that improperly installed floor mats could be causing gas pedals to engage, leading to accidents from uncontrollable acceleration. Customers were advised to remove the driver’s side floor mat as a solution to the problem. At the time, Toyota claimed that there we no other defects with the vehicles. The NHSTA disagreed, and publicly chastised Toyota for its “inaccurate and misleading” statements claiming no other defects existed in the recalled cars. The NHTSA issued its own statement, saying the recalled vehicles have an underlying defect in the design of the accelerator pedal and the driver’s foot well.
Floor Mat Recall:
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- 2007-2010 Camry
- 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2008-2010 Highlander
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2004-2009 Prius
- 2005-2010 Tacoma
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2009-2010 VENZA
Accelerator Pedal Recall
Finally, on January 21, 2009; Toyota admitted to additional problems with the vehicles by announcing another recall for an additional 2.3 million vehicles. The recall expanded the floor mat recall to cover an additional one million vehicles, and acknowledged a malfunction in their acceleration pedals, which could cause the pedals to depress and become stuck.
Toyota now says it remove and replace gas pedals in its recalled vehicles. However, that fix comes too late for the victims of this dangerous defect.
Accelerator Pedal Recall:
- Certain 2009-2010 RAV4
- Certain 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- Certain 2007-2010 Camry
- Certain 2010 Highlander
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2008-2010 Sequoia
Problems with Toyota’s “Drive-By-Wire” Acceleration System
In the 1990s, Toyota began using an electronic accelerator system in its vehicles. The new system uses sensors and a control unit, and does not have a mechanical link between the accelerator pedal and the throttle linkage. This “drive-by-wire” system could be at the heart of uncontrollable acceleration problem, as the system is vulnerable to electronic interference and does not have a mechanical or electronic “fail-safe” system. A fail-safe system would enable drivers to regain control of their vehicle in an emergency acceleration situation. For years, Toyota denied problems with their accelerator system, even as reports of injuries and accidents mounted.

Despite FDA regulations, many products slip by with unknown and harmful side effects that could be caused by a flaw in design or production.
